Class Participation

By now you have all received a Participation Grid. Because you are all expected to be active participating members of our class during discussions, activities and instruction, the grid is an easy way for me to document that you are doing what is expected. Here's how it works:

  • When you start the marking period, you start with a 60% for your participation grade. That's not bad for just sitting in class and taking up a chair. But that's not our goal, so you need to demonstrate your ability to pay attention, volunteer answers, and complete instructed tasks.
  • When you come into class, take out your grid and leave it on your desk. As you participate, I walk around and stamp your sheet.
  • You will earn a full stamp if your are right on the mark, or a half stamp if your discussion is good, but could be taken up a little.
  • After you fill your sheet, turn it in and pick up a new one.
  • Each completed row is worth two points (making each sheet worth 8 points). You would need five completed sheets to get a 100% for the grading period.
  • Up to 4 stamps can carry over from the first grading period to the second if you choose.
  • Yes, extra credit is given for more than five completed sheets!
  • Be careful. You can lose stamps if you are off task, disrespectful, sleeping, etc. Don't let that happen to you!
  • You are responsible for having your stamp sheet available to receive stamps. If it's not there, I won't ask for it.
  • You are responsible for turning them in when they're full. Don't lose them and write your name on your new sheet as soon as you get a new one.
  • Stamps will be given during any time during a class, but not all the time, so it is up to you to keep up your level of participation at all times.
